Saline Breast Implants
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants is the safest implant choice when you wanted to undergo breast augmentation. Instead of containing the traditional silicone gel which has been used over the past several decades, saline breast implants contains sterile saline or salt water.
Why is saline breast implants deemed as the safest implant there is? Well, if you’re afraid of the health risk that might be incurred in implant rupture and leakage, you don’t have to worry about that thing with saline breast implants because the sterile saline will be absorbed by the body without causing any health problems at all.
Also, when leakage has happened, a ruptured saline breast implant can be easily detected by the patient because one of her breasts will look smaller than the other. Early detection of leakage will allow the patient to consult her doctor immediately about the problem. This will require a follow up surgery to insert a new implant to replace the ruptured saline breast implant.
Two kinds of Saline Breast Implants
- Pre-filled Saline Breast Implants
There’s the so called pre-filled saline breast implants that already contains the proper cubic centimeters of the salt water filling. Pre-filled saline breast implants are encased in silicone shells and they are ready for placement as soon as the patient has chosen the size of the implants they wanted to have.
Inserting these implants require a slightly larger incision because they are already pre-filled prior to the surgical procedure. This means you may have a larger scar as compared to having the deflated saline breast implants.
- Deflated Saline Breast Implants
Deflated saline breast implants are far different from their pre-filled counterparts. These implants can be inserted into place even with one-inch incision because they can be rolled into a cigar size prior to insertion. The deflated saline breast implants have a small tube where the sterile saline fluid will be injected after they have been inserted. If breast asymmetry is to happen, this could be fixed immediately by adding more volume of saline to the implant that looks a bit smaller.
One of the problems that may be encountered by the cosmetic surgeon is when he wasn’t able to properly spread out the deflated saline breast implants after rolling them before the insertion process. This usually happens when the location of the incision is a bit far off from the breast area such as incisions made on the navel or under the armpits.
The farther away the surgeon works on the breasts, the lesser the precision he will get for the surgical procedure. This is the reason why you have to choose a surgeon who is proficient and experienced when it comes to using deflated saline breast implants.
Disadvantages of Saline Breast Implants
- Look and feel
One of the disadvantages of using saline breast implants is that they do not provide you with the look and feel of natural breasts. They may look like hard breasts and feel like one too because they are filled salt water even if their shells are made from silicone. If what you are after is the natural look and feel of breasts, this kind of implant may not be the best choice for you.
- Rippling
Rippling is also one of the main disadvantages of saline breast implants. Rippling or the ability to be felt can be minimized by placing the implants under the chest wall muscles especially if the woman has thin breast skin and tissues. But if the patient has thicker breast skin and tissues, rippling is less visible and less felt. You can talk to your cosmetic surgeon about the best placement option for your body type to lessen rippling.
